On 12th August 2024, conservation enthusiasts, environmentalists, and stakeholders in wildlife protection will gather virtually to observe World Elephant Day through an enlightening Zoom webinar. The event, organized in partnership with the National Park Service Nigeria, focuses on the theme “Safeguarding Elephants’ Habitat: Our Shared Responsibility.”
The webinar will address the urgent need for concerted efforts to protect the diminishing habitats of elephants in Nigeria and across Africa. With the continuous encroachment of human activities into wildlife territories, the preservation of elephant habitats has become critical not only for the survival of these majestic creatures but also for the ecological balance they help maintain.
Dr. Ibrahim Goni, the Conservator General of the National Park Service Nigeria, will serve as the Chief Host of the event. He will be joined by an esteemed panel of speakers, including:
- Felix Abayomi, Founder of the Wildlife and Conservation Initiative (WACI), who has been at the forefront of wildlife protection and conservation advocacy in Nigeria.
- Seyifunmi Adebote, a renowned environmentalist known for his passionate advocacy for sustainable environmental practices and wildlife conservation.
- Dr. Salamatu J. Fada, a distinguished academic from Bangor University, UK, whose research and work have significantly contributed to understanding environmental sustainability and conservation.
The webinar, scheduled to begin at 12 PM WAT, promises to be a significant event for all stakeholders in wildlife conservation. Participants will gain insights into the current challenges facing elephant habitats and explore collaborative strategies to ensure these habitats are preserved for future generations.
